Dull of Hearing

Sermon Recap

This week’s message centers around the idea that I was created to live in the presence of God. Looking at Hebrews chapters 3–5, I see believers who once walked closely with the Lord begin to grow dull in their hearing because persecution, hardship, and worldly pressures shifted their focus away from Jesus. The author of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is our perfect High Priest who gives us direct access to God’s grace, strength, wisdom, and help. The warning is clear: when my attention becomes consumed with circumstances instead of God’s presence, my spiritual sensitivity begins to fade and it becomes harder to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit.

The central word that we need to understand is “Habitation.” Just as animals were created to thrive in specific environments, I was created to dwell in the presence of God. Polar bears cannot survive in the desert, fish cannot live outside of water, and humanity was never designed to flourish apart from intimacy with the Lord. Jesus reinforces this in John 15 when He says He is the vine and we are the branches. If I remain connected to Him, my life will bear fruit, but apart from Him I can do nothing. The sermon challenges me to stop making the world my habitation and instead choose daily to remain in God’s presence, because where I choose to dwell will shape the direction and health of my spiritual life.

The message also reframes prayer as more than simply bringing requests to God. Prayer is not merely transactional; it is habitation. Prayer is the place where I remain with Him, dwell with Him, and become familiar with His voice. The more time I spend in His presence, the clearer His voice becomes. Just as a mother can recognize her child’s cry because of constant closeness, I learn to recognize the Lord’s voice through consistent time spent with Him. Habitation develops spiritual clarity, peace, discernment, and confidence, and it transforms prayer from a hurried obligation into a place where my soul can truly rest.

We must recognize that the environment we choose to live in spiritually matters deeply. Adam and Eve lost the perfect habitat of God’s presence when they chose sin over intimacy with Him, and the same danger exists for me when I allow the world to become my home. But when I choose to make God’s presence my habitation through daily prayer and remaining in Him, everything changes. My fears lose their grip, my perspective shifts, my desires are reshaped, and my life begins to flow from a place of peace, trust, and communion with God.

Key Scripture

  • Psalms 27:4

  • Genesis Chapters 1–3

Discussion Questions

  1. What are some circumstances or distractions that can cause your spiritual hearing to become “dull,” and how can you intentionally refocus on God’s presence?

  2. The sermon describes prayer as “habitation” instead of merely a transaction. How would your prayer life change if you approached prayer as a place to remain with God rather than simply bringing requests?

  3. Jesus said, “Remain in Me.” What practical habits help you stay connected to Him daily, and what tends to pull you away from that place of abiding?

Prayer

Father, teach us what it truly means to make Your presence our habitation. Forgive us for the moments when we have allowed the pressures and distractions of this world to dull our hearing and pull our focus away from You. Draw us deeper into a life of prayer and abiding, where Your voice becomes familiar, Your peace fills our hearts, and our lives begin to bear lasting fruit. Help us to remain in You daily and to find our strength, joy, and rest in Your presence alone. Amen.

Life Application

  • Create daily space to remain in God’s presence through prayer and worship.
Instead of approaching prayer only when you need something, begin treating prayer as a place of habitation. Set aside intentional time each day to sit with the Lord, worship, read Scripture, listen, and simply remain with Him long enough for your heart to become sensitive to His voice again.

  • Shift your focus from your circumstances back to Jesus.
When anxiety, pressure, disappointment, or distraction begin to consume your thoughts, intentionally redirect your attention toward God’s promises and presence. Refuse to make the problems of this world your habitation, and choose instead to live from a place of trust, peace, and dependence on Him.
