Sermon Recap
Pastor Matt continued the Dust of the Rabbi series by taking a look at one of Jesus’ most famous teaching examples, the washing of his disciples feet. The context involves Jesus’ disciples arguing about who would be greatest and who would have the highest status. In the middle of that culture of competition, Jesus—their Lord and Teacher—did something completely unexpected: He got up from the table, took a towel, and washed their feet. John emphasizes that Jesus knew who He was, where He came from, and where He was going, and precisely because of that security, He was able to humble Himself and serve others. The foot washing wasn't merely something Jesus did despite being God; it revealed who God is. His leadership is not about using power to make others serve Him, but about willingly laying down His life for others.
After laying the groundwork, Pastor Matt encourages us to recognize a pattern in the story from Jesus' example: Jesus knew, Jesus got up, and Jesus washed feet. First, Jesus knew who He was, giving Him the security and purpose to serve even people who would eventually betray, abandon, and hurt Him. Second, He got up—He recognized what needed to be done and took action. But simply getting up isn't enough; many people can recognize what needs to happen without ever actually serving. Finally, Jesus washed their feet. He moved from knowledge and intention to humble action. True Christlike leadership isn't merely knowing the right thing or appearing willing to serve; it actually puts love into practice.
The challenge is that following Jesus means adopting His posture of love and service, not simply completing occasional acts of service. Instead of pride asking, “Who will serve me?”, humility asks, “Who can I serve?” Jesus calls His followers to use their gifts and leadership not for status, recognition, or privilege, but to build others up. When our identity is secure in Christ, we don't have to fight for the best position, protect our status, or worry about whether others appreciate us. We can willingly go last, give up our preferences, and serve others simply because that is what Jesus did. In the end, it’s not about a behavior change, it’s about a heart change. When the posture of our heart changes, so do our desires. Pride wants a throne; humility picks up a towel.

Discussion Questions
Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.
Who in your life serves you? Are you aware that they serve you, or do you just take it for granted?
Have you ever been to a really fancy restaurant, or somewhere with extraordinary service… What did it feel like?
How motivated are you to serve others?
What causes you to overlook a problem? Are those attitudes the way you want to live?
Serving others may be completely unnatural, that’s why it has to start with our relationship with God. In what ways have you been reluctant to put others first?
Serving starts with seeing the needs of others. In what ways could you serve others in your church, community, family, place of work, or wherever you find yourself?
Be creative, but remember, it’s not about a one-time action. It’s training yourself to continually look for ways to serve others.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving us so completely and sacrificially. Help us to truly recognize how deeply we are loved by You, so that we no longer have to seek status, recognition, or approval from others. Give us a heart that is secure in Your love and, because we have received such great love from You, willing to freely give that love to others. Teach us to see the needs around us, to put others before ourselves, and to serve without needing to be noticed or rewarded. Give us the humility to pick up the towel, to go last, to lay down our preferences, and to love even when it is difficult. May our service not come from obligation, but from an overflow of knowing how greatly You have loved us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
