Week 3- Following Beyond Shame

Sermon Recap

In this week’s message, we continued our Dust of the Rabbi series by remembering that discipleship is not simply believing the right things or attending church on Sundays. To be covered in the dust of our Rabbi means we are following Jesus so closely that every part of our lives is being formed and transformed by Him. The invitation to follow Jesus is offered to every person, and nothing in our past or present disqualifies us from that invitation. Romans 5 reminds us that Christ died for us while we were still sinners, yet shame often convinces us that if Jesus really knew everything about us, He would take the invitation off the table.

In John 4, Jesus intentionally travels through Samaria and meets a woman at a well in the heat of the day. Everything about this encounter would have been shocking in the first-century world: Jesus was a Jew speaking to a Samaritan, a rabbi speaking publicly with a woman, and a holy man engaging someone carrying deep shame. Yet Jesus does not avoid her, reject her, or withdraw from her. Instead, He meets her right where she is, offers her living water, names the shame she is carrying, and then reveals Himself to her as the Messiah. The climax of the story is not that Jesus exposes her sin, but that even knowing her story, He still chooses to reveal the fullness of who He is to her.

The Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus transforms her. She leaves her water jar behind and runs back to the very village where she had experienced shame and rejection, inviting others to come and see the One who told her everything she had ever done. Her testimony was not powerful because her life was perfect, but because she had been truly transformed by Jesus. As disciples sitting in the dust of our Rabbi, we learn that Jesus calls us to follow Him beyond our shame and beyond our comfort zones. He invites us to leave our own “water jars” behind — the regret, failure, and shame that tell us we are disqualified — and receive the living water only He can give.

Key Scripture

Read through these passages together:

  • John 4:1-30

Discussion Questions

Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.

  1. In the sermon, shame is described as something that can convince us we are disqualified from Jesus’ invitation. Where do you see shame creating distance between people and Jesus today?

  2. Jesus intentionally went through Samaria and met the woman at the well right where she was. What does this reveal about the heart and character of Jesus?

  3. The woman wanted Jesus to solve her immediate problem, but Jesus offered her something deeper: living water. What are some temporary “wells” people return to when they are really longing for Jesus?

  4. The Samaritan woman left her water jar behind and went back to tell others about Jesus. What is one “water jar” — regret, failure, fear, shame, or comfort zone — that Jesus may be inviting you to leave behind?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for meeting us right where we are. Thank You that our shame, regret, failure, and past mistakes do not disqualify us from Your invitation. Help us to stop hiding, stop carrying what You have already offered to redeem, and receive the living water only You can give. Teach us to sit in the dust of our Rabbi, to follow You beyond our comfort zones, and to love others with the same compassion and grace You have shown us. This week, help us leave our water jars behind and walk in the freedom of being fully known, fully loved, and fully invited by You. In Your name we pray. Amen.

Life Application

  • Identify the “water jar” you may be carrying.
Take time this week to honestly name the regret, shame, failure, fear, or false belief that has been making you feel disqualified from receiving what Jesus is offering.

  • Bring your shame into the presence of Jesus instead of hiding it.
Pray honestly about the thing you would rather avoid. Ask Jesus to meet you there, speak truth over it, and remind you that He already knows your story — and still invites you to follow Him.

  • Follow Jesus beyond your comfort zone.
Look for one person or group you may naturally avoid, overlook, or assume is “too complicated.” Take one intentional step toward them with compassion, grace, and the love of Jesus.
