Sermon Recap
Following Jesus is not simply about believing in Him—it is about surrendering to Him. Jesus taught that discipleship comes with a cost and challenged His followers to count that cost before saying yes. Just as every meaningful relationship or commitment requires sacrifice, following Jesus requires us to place Him above every other affection, ambition, and priority in our lives. True discipleship means allowing Jesus to shape our identity, transform our thinking, and lead every area of our lives.
The story of the rich young ruler reveals how easy it is to look like a devoted follower while still holding something back from God. This young man was moral, successful, respected, and spiritually sincere, yet when Jesus exposed the one thing he loved more than God, he was unwilling to surrender it. His struggle was not ultimately about money—it was about lordship. Jesus lovingly identified the obstacle that stood between this man and wholehearted devotion, inviting him to exchange an earthly treasure for a greater heavenly one.
This story invites every believer to examine their own heart. We may not struggle with wealth, but we all face the question of whether there is something we value more than obedience to Jesus. Whether it is comfort, control, success, relationships, reputation, or personal ambition, anything that competes with Christ for first place becomes an idol. The call of discipleship is not to ask, “What more must I do?” but rather, “What am I willing to surrender?” Though following Jesus may cost us something, the joy, freedom, and abundant life found in Him are worth far more than anything we leave behind.

Discussion Questions
Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.
Jesus tells His followers to "count the cost" before becoming His disciples. What do you think is the biggest misconception Christians have today about the cost of following Jesus?
The rich young ruler asked, “What must I do?” rather than “What am I willing to surrender?” Why do you think it is often easier to focus on religious activities than on wholehearted surrender?
Jesus identified the one thing that held first place in the rich young ruler’s heart. If Jesus were to lovingly expose an area of your life that competes with Him for first place, what might it be and why?
Abraham was willing to trust God with what he loved most. How does his example challenge the way we view our relationships, possessions, ambitions, and even the blessings God has given us?
Jesus promised that whatever we surrender for His sake will never compare to what we gain in return. Can you share a time when obedience to Jesus cost you something but ultimately brought greater joy, peace, growth, or blessing?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving us enough to call us into a deeper relationship with You. Help us to honestly examine our hearts and reveal anything that is competing with You for first place in our lives. Give us the courage to surrender whatever You ask us to lay down and the faith to trust that Your plans are always better than our own. Teach us to follow You wholeheartedly, not just with our words, but with every part of our lives. May we love You above all else and find our identity, joy, and purpose in You alone. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Life Application
Identify Your “One Thing”
Spend time in prayer this week and ask God, “Is there anything in my life that I love, trust, or prioritize more than You?” Be honest about whatever He brings to mind.
Practice One Act of Surrender
Take one practical step to place Jesus first in that area. It may mean releasing control, changing a habit, forgiving someone, giving generously, or choosing obedience where God has been prompting you.
Choose Daily Devotion Over Occasional Commitment
Each day this week, intentionally spend time with Jesus through prayer and Scripture, reminding yourself that discipleship is not just something you do on Sundays—it is a life fully surrendered to Him every day.
