Week 5 - Following When Jesus Seems Silent

Sermon Recap

There are seasons in every believer's life when heaven feels quiet. You pray, seek, knock, and pursue God with sincerity, yet all you seem to hear is silence. Through the account of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4, this message reminds us that silence from God is not the same as absence from God. The disciples were exactly where Jesus had instructed them to be, yet they still encountered a violent storm. Their circumstances reveal an important truth: following Jesus does not exempt us from difficulty. Storms are not always evidence that we have missed God's will; sometimes they are proof that we are walking right in the middle of it.

As fear and uncertainty intensified, the disciples questioned not Jesus' ability, but His heart: "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" In the middle of our own storms, we often do the same. Delayed answers can make us assume God is indifferent. Silence can feel like rejection. Closed doors can appear to be abandonment. Yet the cross forever settled the question of God's love and care for us. Even when we cannot understand His timing or methods, we never have to question His heart. God's silence often tests whether we will trust the last thing He clearly spoke to us rather than our present emotions.

The disciples also discovered that the very storm that terrified them remained completely subject to Jesus' authority. With a single command, the wind and waves obeyed their Creator. Whatever causes us fear today—sickness, uncertainty, financial pressure, loss, or the unknown—ultimately answers to Christ. The storm never has the final word; Jesus does. Following Him means trusting that He remains sovereign even when circumstances suggest otherwise.

Finally, Jesus revealed that His greatest work was not merely calming the sea but transforming the hearts of His followers. He addressed the storm, but then He addressed their faith. Sometimes God calms the storm around us, and sometimes He calms the storm within us. Either way, He is shaping us into stronger disciples. Faith is not hearing God's voice every moment; faith is continuing to follow when the last thing He said is all you have. The silence of Jesus never means the absence of Jesus. If He is in your boat, you can trust Him through every storm.

Key Scripture

Read through these passages together:

  • Mark 4:35–41 – Jesus calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee (primary text)

  • John 3:16 – God's love demonstrated through the gift of His Son

Discussion Questions

Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.

  1. Can you identify a season in your life when Jesus seemed silent? How did that experience affect your faith, and what did you learn about God's presence through it?

  2. Which of the statements about fear misinterpreting God's character resonated with you most? Why do you think fear has such a powerful influence on how we view God during difficult seasons?

  3. What is the "last thing" you believe God clearly spoke to you through His Word or by His Spirit? How can remaining faithful to that direction strengthen your trust while you wait for greater clarity?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that Your silence never means Your absence. When fear rises and the storms of life threaten to overwhelm us, help us trust Your heart and hold tightly to the promises You have already spoken. Lord Jesus, strengthen our faith to keep following You even when we don't understand Your timing or cannot see what You're doing. Teach us to rest in Your sovereignty.  When You are in our boat, we have nothing to fear. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Life Application

  • Return to the Last Thing God Spoke.
Spend time this week reflecting on the last truth, promise, or direction God clearly impressed upon your heart through His Word. Instead of allowing fear to dictate your next step, choose to remain faithful and obedient to what He has already revealed.

  • Replace Fear with Trust Through Prayer.
Each time anxiety or uncertainty surfaces, intentionally surrender that specific fear to Jesus in prayer. Remind yourself that the storm you're facing is under His authority, and declare, "The storm does not have the final word—Jesus does."
