Sermon Recap
This week we explored what it means to follow the Light. Setting the stage, we explored practically how light stands out in the darkness, whether it was a headlamp in the darkened wilderness or tiny LED blinking from afar. Diving into scripture we solidified that Jesus is the one true light, which he declares in John 8:12.
As we continued on, the focus shifts to ourselves. As we read in Matthew 5, Jesus calls us to be lights in this world, reflecting His truth so that others can find their way. Darkness and light represent a huge dichotomy, and our actions either illuminate Christ or cloud his image.
Next we considered why living as light can be difficult. Many of us would rather stay hidden than stand out, whether because of fear, embarrassment, or the desire to avoid conflict. Yet Jesus teaches that a lamp is meant to be placed on a stand, not hidden under a bowl. His light exposes what is hidden and John 3 reminds us that people resist the light because they don’t want their deeds exposed.
Finally, we looked at Paul’s challenge in Ephesians 4-5 to “live as children of light.” Paul doesn’t speak in vague generalities - he identifies specific attitudes and behaviors that belong to darkness and calls believers to reject them while pursuing goodness, righteousness, and truth. The goal is not legalism or a checklist of rules, but wholehearted devotion to Jesus. As we follow Him more closely, His light exposes what doesn’t belong in our lives and transforms us so that we can shine brightly for others.

Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.
Tell us about a time you were completely lost in the dark or a time you noticed the value of light.
Jesus called himself the light of the world - what attributes of light do you think make this an accurate statement?
Is there any darkness in your life that you are trying to conceal? Why? Are you afraid of the consequences, judgement, shame, or disappointing others? Consider sharing a time you brought things into the light, what was the result?
Paul says we should “expose the fruitless deeds of darkness,” IIs there any darkness you see in those around you that you should confront? What makes this hard to do? How can you seek God’s wisdom and discernment in doing this out of love?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit and allow me to live as a bright light for you in this dark world. Give me courage not to just run from the darkness but to confront it. Before I confront the world, search me and expose any darkness I have in my own life. Father, I submit all my ways to. Align my thinking with yours in areas that I have compromised. As I understand my own guilt, give me a softer heart of compassion towards others I see in darkness.
Life Application
Paul writes that what comes into the light becomes light. How can you turn the failure of staying in hidden sin into a triumph of becoming light?
Consider taking a step of boldness and confronting a brother or sister in Christ out of love.
