Sermon Recap
This week we were challenged with the powerful truth that following Jesus always requires leaving something behind. When Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John to follow Him, He wasn't simply asking them to add Him to their existing lives. He was calling them to leave behind their nets, boats, careers, security, and sense of control. In the same way, you cannot fully embrace the life Jesus has for you while holding tightly to the things that keep you anchored to your old way of living. True discipleship requires surrender, trust, and a willingness to let go of whatever stands between you and wholehearted obedience to Christ.
Jesus' invitation to "Follow Me" is not merely a call to believe certain truths but an invitation into an entirely new way of life. In the culture of Jesus' day, disciples organized their lives around their rabbi with three goals: to be with him, become like him, and do what he did. Jesus extends that same invitation to you today. Following Him means walking daily in His presence, allowing the Holy Spirit to transform your character, and joining Him in His mission to reach the world around you.
Jesus redefines who can become a disciple. While the religious leaders of the day chose only the most qualified students, Jesus went to ordinary fishermen, tax collectors, and broken people and invited them to follow Him. Through Peter's story in Luke 5, you see that Jesus does not call people because they are qualified; He calls them because He sees what they can become through His grace. Just as Jesus saw beyond Peter's failures and weaknesses, He sees beyond yours and calls you into His greater purpose.
At the end we were challenged to identify the "nets" you may still be holding onto. Many people want Jesus as Savior but hesitate to surrender to Him as Lord. Yet the abundant life Jesus promises is found on the other side of obedience and surrender. The invitation remains open today: drop your nets, release whatever is keeping you from fully following Christ, and walk closely behind Him. As you follow in the dust of your Rabbi, you will discover the purpose, freedom, and life that can only be found in Him.

Discussion Questions
Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.
1. When you hear the statement, "Following requires leaving," what stands out to you the most? What "nets" (habits, fears, relationships, comforts, mindsets, or areas of control) might Jesus be asking you to leave behind right now?
2. The goal of a disciple was to be with their rabbi, become like their rabbi, and do what their rabbi did. Which of these three areas comes most naturally to you, and which one needs the most growth in your life?
3. Peter initially felt unworthy of Jesus' call because he saw himself as a sinful man. Have you ever felt unqualified for what God was asking you to do? How does Peter's story encourage you to trust God's calling despite your weaknesses?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to follow Jesus. Give us the courage to lay down every net that is keeping us from wholehearted obedience, whether it is fear, pride, comfort, control, or sin. Help us trust that what You have for us is far greater than anything we leave behind. Teach us to walk closely with Jesus, becoming more like Him each day and following wherever He leads. Thank You that You see beyond our failures and call us into Your purpose and destiny. Today, we say yes to Your invitation to follow You completely. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Life Application
Identify and Drop a Net
Spend time with the Lord this week and ask, "What is one thing I am holding onto that is hindering me from fully following You?" Whether it's a habit, fear, offense, unhealthy relationship, pride, or a need to stay in control, surrender it to Jesus and take one practical step toward leaving it behind.
Walk in the Dust of Your Rabbi
Commit to intentionally being with Jesus every day this week. Set aside time for prayer and Scripture, not just to gain information, but to grow in intimacy with Him. Ask yourself each day: How can I become more like Jesus and do what He would do in my relationships, work, and daily life?
