Part 2 - Week 1 - Aligning with His Word

Sermon Recap

In this message, we explored what it means to live a life that brings glory to God. Jesus said in John 17:4 that He glorified the Father on earth, and we are called to do the same. Glorifying God is about more than singing worship songs, preaching sermons, or serving in the church. It means making a decision to align every area of our lives with the will of God. Our words, thoughts, relationships, choices, schedules, finances, businesses, and actions should all reflect the heart of Jesus. The key is not trying to make God's Word fit our lives, but aligning our lives with His Word. We don't change God's Word to fit our lives; we change our lives to align with His Word.

There are two primary reasons we fall out of alignment with God's Word. First, we don't know His Word. When we neglect Scripture, we struggle to understand the Father's heart, recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit, and discern the difference between truth and deception. We become vulnerable to the changing opinions of culture, the arguments of people, and the lies we encounter every day. Hebrews 5 reminds us that spiritual maturity comes as we continually put God's Word into practice, training ourselves to distinguish good from evil. Romans 12:2 calls us to resist conformity to the world and allow God to transform us by renewing our minds. We must be rooted in Christ, grounded in Scripture, and equipped to recognize anything that pulls us away from the truth.

The second reason we fall out of alignment is that we sometimes know what God's Word says but choose to ignore it because it conflicts with how we want to live. This is more than a lack of knowledge; it is disobedience. James 1:22 reminds us to be doers of the Word, not merely hearers, and James 4:17 teaches that knowing the right thing to do and refusing to do it is sin. We cannot pick and choose which parts of Scripture we will obey based on our preferences or what culture accepts. God's truth is not relative, and our calling is not to reshape His Word around our opinions. Whether we are making personal decisions, navigating cultural issues, or determining how we engage in the world around us, our responsibility is to let God's Word shape our convictions, guide our choices, and direct our lives.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to live under His authority in every area of life. The message addressed abortion and Islam as examples of cultural issues that the pastor believes must be evaluated through the lens of Scripture rather than popular opinion. The larger principle is that our convictions and decisions—including how we engage in our communities and vote—should flow from our commitment to God's Word. At the same time, we are called to love all people and reveal the character of Jesus, even when we disagree with their beliefs or values. Ultimately, our calling is to share Christ, live Christ, love people, and align our whole lives with His Word. Jesus is already victorious, and we are invited to live in the truth of that victory.

Discussion Questions

Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.

1. Aligning Our Lives with God's Word: The sermon says we should not try to make God's Word fit our lives; instead, we must align our lives with His Word. What are some areas of life where we are most tempted to do the opposite? How can we recognize when we are allowing our preferences or culture to shape our understanding of Scripture?

2. Knowing the Word vs. Obeying the Word: The sermon identifies two reasons we fall out of alignment with God: we don't know His Word, or we know it but choose to ignore it. Which of these challenges do you think Christians struggle with most today? What practical steps can you take to grow in both your understanding of Scripture and your obedience to it?

3. Living a Life That Glorifies God: The message challenges us to align our mouths, minds, hearts, choices, relationships, schedules, and finances with God's will. What is one specific area of your life where God may be calling you into greater alignment with His Word? What is one practical step you can take this week to respond in obedience?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us to align every area of our lives with Your Word, not just when it’s convenient, but in every decision, every relationship, and every choice we make. Forgive us for the times we have neglected Your truth or knowingly chosen our own way, and renew our minds through Your Word so we can recognize truth and discern Your will. Give us the courage to stand firm in Your truth while loving all people with the heart of Jesus, sharing His love and reflecting His character to the world around us. Holy Spirit, set our hearts on fire for You and help us live lives that bring glory to Your name in everything we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Life Application

  • Commit to knowing God's Word daily. Set aside intentional time each day to read Scripture, allowing God to renew your mind, shape your convictions, and help you discern truth from the lies and influences of culture.

  • Identify one area where you need to come into alignment with God's Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal an area where you have been following your own preferences rather than God's truth, and take one practical step this week to bring that area of your life under the Lordship of Jesus.
