Week 4 - Return To The Altar

Sermon Recap

This Sunday, we talked about what it means to return to the altar. The altar is the place where we lay down what we love most so that God can have what He wants most, our complete surrender. Through the story of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22, we saw that surrender is about much more than giving God our sin, addictions, pride, bitterness, or disobedience. Sometimes the greatest test of surrender is whether we are willing to surrender something good, something God Himself has given us. Isaac wasn't a bad thing; he was a promise, an answer to prayer, and Abraham's future. Yet God asked Abraham to place Isaac on the altar.

We talked about how easy it is to love the gifts God has given us without realizing that those gifts can sometimes become more important to us than the Giver. We can love our families, pursue our careers, have dreams, lead a church, and serve in ministry, but none of those things can take the place that belongs only to God. Surrender means giving God permission to interrupt our plans. It means trusting Him even when we don't understand what He is doing. Control says, “I'll obey when I understand,” but faith says, “I'll obey because I trust the One who asked.” At the altar, negotiation ends, and we move from saying, “God, here's what I'm willing to give You,” to saying, “God, whatever You want is Yours.”

We also talked about how Abraham had to release the outcome. He didn't know what God was going to do next, but he was willing to surrender Isaac without knowing the ending. Only after Abraham released Isaac did he see the ram God had provided. Sometimes we don't see God's provision until we release what we're holding. Surrender has to come before revelation. Holy Fire isn't ultimately about asking God for more fire; it's about asking God to make us completely His. Romans 12:1 calls us to offer our entire lives as a living sacrifice. The altar isn't just where we put our sin—the altar is where we put ourselves.

So this week, we were challenged to return to the altar. Maybe we have surrendered our lives to Jesus but picked something back up. Maybe we've surrendered our future, our children, our marriage, our finances, or our dreams, but we've started taking control again. The invitation is to come back to the place where we can honestly say, “Whatever You want. Whenever You want. However You want. I give it to You. My life—it's Yours, Lord.” Before we ask God to send the fire, we have to be willing to return to the altar, because fire falls on surrendered places. Holy Fire begins when we become fully His.

Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ. 

  1. What is something good that God has given you that could become too important in your life? How can you love the gift without loving it more than the Giver?

  2. Where are you tempted to negotiate with God instead of fully surrendering? What would it look like to say, “Whatever You want, whenever You want, however You want”?

  3. Why do you think surrender often has to come before revelation? Is there an area of your life where God may be asking you to trust Him before you know the outcome?


Prayer 

Dear Heavenly Father, help us return to the altar and surrender not only the things that are wrong in our lives, but even the good things You have given us, trusting You with everything we love. Teach us to release control, trust You when we don't understand, and say, “Whatever You want, whenever You want, however You want—I give it to You.” Make us completely Yours and let Your Holy Fire fall on every surrendered place in our lives as we choose to live fully consecrated to You. Amen.



Life Application

  • Identify your “Isaac.”
     Take some time this week and honestly ask the Holy Spirit: “Is there anything good in my life that I have started holding more tightly than I hold onto You?” Write it down and intentionally place it back on the altar.

  • Practice complete surrender every day.
     Begin each morning with this simple prayer: “Whatever You want. Whenever You want. However You want. I give it to You. My life is Yours, Lord.” Then look for one specific opportunity that day to choose trust over control.
