Week 8: A Shepherd King

Sermon Recap

In this sermon, we are reminded that Jesus is our Shepherd King, and that, like sheep, we are vulnerable, easily distracted, and unable to guide ourselves. The illustration of a sheep stuck in a ditch shows what our lives look like without Him, trapped in sin, fear, or confusion, needing rescue again and again. We are not clever, strong, or self-sufficient; our only hope lies in recognizing and following the Shepherd’s voice, trusting Him to lead us, protect us, and restore us.

As we reflect on John 10:1-18, we see that Jesus calls us by name and leads us personally. To know His voice, we must spend time in Scripture, learning His ways and listening for His guidance in our daily lives. Jesus also declares Himself the gate for the sheep, showing that our safety, salvation, and abundant life are found exclusively through Him. There is no other entrance to God or eternal life except through Christ’s sacrifice.

We are called to see the difference between the Good Shepherd and a hired hand. Unlike a worker motivated by money, Jesus is devoted to us personally, willing to lay down His life for us. To follow Him, we must rest in His love, trust His protection, and rely on His care, knowing it is steadfast and unending.

Finally, we are reminded that Jesus’ shepherding extends beyond any one group. He came for all people, offering salvation to anyone who responds to His call. We cannot shepherd ourselves, no matter how hard we try. We need Him. The message closes by inviting us to hear His voice, receive Him as Lord, and enter fully into His care, joining His one global flock of redeemed people.

Discussion Questions

  1. How do we see ourselves as “sheep” in our daily lives? In what ways do we tend to wander or drift away from God?

  2. What does it mean to know the Shepherd’s voice, and how can we grow in our ability to recognize it?

  3. How does understanding Jesus as the Good Shepherd, who lays down His life for us, change the way we respond to His guidance and protection?

  4. In what ways can we help others experience Jesus as the Shepherd King, especially those who may not yet know Him?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, we thank You for calling us by name and guiding us with Your loving voice. Help us to recognize Your voice above all others and to trust You fully in every area of our lives. Restore us when we wander, protect us from harm, and lead us into abundant life. Teach us to rely on You, follow You closely, and share Your care with others.  Amen.
