Week 13: A People of Expectancy

Sermon Recap

This week’s message in the Kingdom Culture series, titled “An Expectant Church,” centered on what it means to live with true expectancy for Jesus—and the danger of expecting the wrong version of Him. On that first Palm Sunday, the crowds welcomed Jesus with excitement and hope, crying out “Hosanna” as He entered Jerusalem. But their expectation was shaped by their circumstances. They were looking for a political savior who would overthrow Rome and restore their national power. While their expectancy was real, it was misplaced, and by the end of the week, many of the same voices would turn against Him. The message reminds us that it is possible to be expectant and still miss what God is actually doing.

The sermon also highlighted how this expectancy was rooted in God’s covenantal promises throughout Scripture. From Noah to Abraham to David, God continually made promises that pointed to a coming Messiah. These promises created a deep longing and anticipation among God’s people. However, after centuries of waiting—especially during the silence between the Old and New Testaments—the people began redefining the Messiah according to their own desires and struggles. Instead of trusting what God had said, they reshaped their expectations to fit their current reality. As a result, when Jesus came, they didn’t recognize Him because He didn’t match the version they had created in their minds.

The message then turned to the Church today, calling believers to be a people who wait with true, biblical expectancy for Christ’s return. Jesus taught that His return would come unexpectedly and that His followers must remain ready at all times. The illustration of the ten bridesmaids reminds us that readiness is not about outward appearance, but about the condition of our hearts. The “oil” represents a life that is spiritually prepared—rooted in God’s presence, shaped by His Word, and sustained through prayer. An expectant church keeps its focus on Jesus, not on cultural distractions or external circumstances. As we wait for His return, we are called to live faithfully, stay prepared, and remain anchored in the truth of who He truly is—not who we want Him to be.

Discussion Questions

  1. The crowd on Palm Sunday was full of expectation but still missed who Jesus truly was. What are some ways people today might have expectations of Jesus that don’t align with Scripture?

  2. How can our current circumstances (culture, politics, personal struggles) shape or distort the way we view Jesus and what we expect from Him?

  3. Jesus teaches that we must stay ready for His return at all times. What does spiritual readiness look like in everyday life?

  4. In the parable of the ten bridesmaids, the oil represents a genuine, prepared spiritual life. What are some practical ways we can “keep oil in our lamps”?

  5. What is one area of your life where you may need to realign your expectations of Jesus with who He truly reveals Himself to be?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being a faithful God who always keeps Your promises. Help us to see Jesus clearly and not shape Him around our own expectations. Keep our hearts aligned with Your truth. Teach us to stay ready, to stay watchful, and to stay close to You. Fill our lives with Your presence so that we are prepared for whatever You are doing and for the day Jesus returns. Help us to live with faith, obedience, and true expectancy. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
