Week 3: Spirit-Empowered

Sermon Recap

In this week’s sermon, Pastor Matt challenges the church to become a truly Spirit-empowered people—not just enjoying God’s presence, but actively joining Him in His mission to reach others.

We began with the sobering reality of hell, not to instill fear, but to highlight the urgency and importance of sharing the gospel. While the church should emphasize hope and invitation, understanding eternity clarifies why believers are called to action. Christians are not only created to worship God, but to partner with Him as co-workers in building His Kingdom.

At the heart of this calling is love. Following the example of Jesus, believers are called to leave comfort behind and go to others—even enemies—motivated by sacrificial love. However, if we aren’t careful, we may join alongside many Christians who now see sharing their faith as optional, leading to an incomplete, passive faith that never “goes on offense.”

In closing, Pastor Matt emphasizes that genuine closeness with Jesus naturally leads to being among those far from God. True Christian love is not static—it is sent. Drawing from the meaning of the Greek word apostellō (“to be sent with purpose and authority”), he explains that believers are called to go away from comfort and into the world with a mission to bring people back into right relationship with God.

Key Scripture

  • Ephesians 5:1-2

  • John 3:16-17

  • Phillipians 2:2-11

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think Pastor Matt began by talking about the reality of hell? Do you think that approach helps or hinders the message? Why?

  2. Pastor Matt said one distinguishing characteristic of Christian love is that it is  “sent”—what do you think that means in everyday life?  What other scriptures can you find that describe the “sending” nature of Christ? Are there any places you feel reluctant to go?

  3. Why do you think many Christians today see sharing their faith as optional? In addition, what are some barriers that keep people from talking about their faith with others?

  4. When is the last time you intentionally spent time with someone who doesn’t know Jesus in order to show them Jesus? Are there specific “lost” people in your life that you are praying for?

  5. What is one practical step you could take this week to share your faith in a real and natural way?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for making a way for us to be reconciled to you. When I was a lost sinner, you loved me. Would you cause my heart to have that same love for others? Not only if it is convenient, not only if I think they deserve it, not only if they are my friends. I am willing to be sent to find your lost sheep. You said the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Count me in as one who is willing to work!

Life Application

  • Ask God to give you a heart for the Lost— You won't “go” for Jesus until you’ve sat with Him and received his heart. Pray for a burden for the unsaved.

  • Commit to Go — Everyone lives in a community that needs Jesus. Where is he calling you to go?  Make a decision and say “yes” to Jesus’ call!
